Use these prompts for families, libraries, classrooms, homeschool groups, and informal book clubs. They are designed to work before major plot reveals.

Universal prompts

  • What does the main character want at the beginning?
  • What does the character fear losing?
  • Which setting feels most alive?
  • How does the book define courage?
  • What does the title mean before the ending?

Young readers

  • What clue surprised you?
  • Which friend or sibling would you want on your team?
  • What did the characters learn from the place they visited?
  • What is the difference between a fact and a hidden truth?

  • What makes a bond freely chosen?
  • How do rules protect characters? How can they control them?
  • Which old warning seems most important?
  • How does fear shape decisions before battle begins?

Facilitator note

For spoiler-free groups, keep early sessions focused on character wants, setting, theme, and questions raised by the opening chapters. Save ending-specific discussion for a second meeting or marked spoiler section.
